This past wrapped up the 20th anniversary of ReedPop’s New York Comi Con. The largest convention in the US. I can still remember my first, from way back in 2010. Back when you could casually buy a weekend ticket from comic shops like Forbidden Planet and Midtown Comics, for $50, a week before the event, after a friend told you it exists and shares the venue with AnimeFest. Good times.
I was a bit disappointed at the lack of 20th anniversary celebrations though, or at least I wasn’t privy to any. As far as I know, it was delegated to just merch sales. It was a great celebration regardless. Larger than life displays, celebrity appearances, big announcements, and most importantly, the nerd community visiting from all around the world.
In my personal experience, I had the pleasure of attending the Dragon Ball Super Beerus panel, hosted by Monica Rial (English voice of Bulma) with guests Jason Douglas (Beerus) and Ian Sinclaire (Whis), and a recorded message from Masako Nozawa (Japanese Goku) and Koichi Yamadera. After sharing their excitement for getting to work on the series again, they premiered the first episode of Dragon Ball Super Beerus, which looks spectacular.
When I wasn’t sitting in panels, I was walking back and forth between every Bandai booth, who always steals the show to me. Between forcing myself to resist purchasing every new Tamashi Nation Figure, to staring in awe at all the new upcoming figures, and of course playing game demos like the one for the upcoming Gundam Rogue Orbit.
The attractions, as usual, were overwhelming. I’d heard great things about the Crystal Lake experience, meant to promote the upcoming experience, but just like with every other ultra popular experience, like playing the upcoming Naruto Card Game, you’ve gotta get in early, otherwise you’re probably out of luck, just like my friend who was far too high up in the queue, and didn’t get to participate.
NYCC will return in 2027 from October 7th-10th, finally allowed to legally drink. Will you be there? If you attended, tell us about your experience.
