Netflix has announced its exciting lineup of anime titles set to premiere this summer, with a slate of returning favorites that fans have been hype for!
Akane-Banashi (May 16)
Akane-banashi is a comedy-drama written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamas Moue. It follows a young girl who wants to reach the highest rank in rakugo (a Japanese form of comedic storytelling) to avenge her father, who was pushed out of the profession several years earlier. The anime adaptation is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, written by Michihiro Tsuchiya, with music by Akio Izutsu, and animation by Zexcs
BLUE LOCK VS. U-20 JAPAN (May 25)
The second season of the exciting sports anime is heading to Netflix! It follows Isagi and the other surviving players as they prove their mettle in the next stage of the Blue Lock program and try to get slotted for an upcoming exhibition match. Blue Lock began as a sports manga written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. The story follows the development of a special training regimen called Blue Lock, an attempt by the Japan Football Union to come back from a devastating loss in the FIFA World Cup. A grueling experience, high school football player Yoichi Isagi joins the program alongside 299 other players to become the best striker in the world. The anime adaptation is produced by Eight Bit and has quickly become a fan favorite for its fast-paced action, dynamic visuals, and heartwrenching story.
My Dress-Up Darling: Season 2 (May 25)
Based on the slice-of-life romantic comedy manga series by Shinichi Fukuda, the second and final season of My Dress-Up Darling will continue the adorable romance between Wakana and Marin! The series focuses on two high schoolers, one a quiet and timid doll maker, and the other an outgoing and friendly anime fan, who come together to craft amazing cosplay and, along the way, fall in love. The anime series is produced by CloverWorks.
Assassination Classroom: Season 2 (Jun 1)
Will the students of Class 3-E graduate? Find out in the last season of sci-fi action comedy Assassination Classroom! An Exciting and hilarious action series that began as a manga published by Shueisha, the series is the story of a group of middle schoolers tasked with killing their powerful, octopus-like homeroom teacher to save the world from destruction, along the way learning deeper truths about their mysterious “kuro-sensei.” The series received much acclaim for its comedy, action, and deep emotional storytelling. The anime adaptation was produced by Lerche.
Shangri-La Frontier: Season 2 (Jun 1)
Sunraku’s adventure in the full-dive VR game Shangri-La Frontier! Based on the light novel series by Katarina, the story follows a teenager who usually masters games deemed bad because of glitches or poor design, and he takes the skills he has gained to the best-selling full-dive VR game, where he dons a bird mask and becomes the character Sunraku. It would later be adapted into a manga series written by Katarina and illustrated by Ryusuke Fuji, with the anime series produced by C2C.
Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express Movie (Jun 1)
A sci-fi comedy movie, it shows the turmoil of the superhuman Chiharu and the cyborg Makina, who, after breaking the law, are sentenced to community service aboard an out-of-control intergalactic subway train. It was created, directed, and written by Yōhei Kameyama, with music by yuugen6, Kōhei Doi, and Shunpei Ishiguro.
ONE PIECE: Whole Cake Island 6 & ONE PIECE: Whole Cake Island 7 (Jun 1)
The adventure to save Sanji takes center stage in these next chapters of the Whole Cake Island arc as the Strawhats deal with the efforts of the Vinsmokes and Big Mom’s Family! One Piece is the smash-hit global sensation of an anime series created by mangaka Eiichiro Oda. It is the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a man with a rubber body who dreams of finding the legendary treasure, One Piece, and becoming the king of the pirates!
