It has been announced that Netflix’s live-action adaption of Cowboy Bebop has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title design!
Outstanding Main Title Design is an award for a series with an exceptional title sequence. With the live-action Cowboy Bebop’s opening being a recreation of the anime series opening, combining the iconic song Tank with new live-action series clips and characters, the nomination makes sense.
Cowboy Bebop started as an anime space western directed by Shinichirō Watanabe. It follows the crew of the Bebop as they hunt bounties and wealth across the solar system. It quickly gained praise for its sense of style, its captivating characters, engrossing musical score (featuring the legendary Yoko Kanno), and narrative.
The Netflix adaption starred John Cho as Spike Spiegal, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Alex Hassel as Vicious, and Elena Satine as Julia.
The Netflix adaption was meant to stand on its own with a unique new story featuring the fan-favorite characters but found itself repeatedly compared to its anime counterpart.
We still maintain that the series deserved better, ending on a cliffhanger teaser that introduced one of the anime’s fan-favorite characters. But who knows, maybe this nomination will lead to interest growing in the series. It wouldn’t be the first time Netflix canceled a show that someone else would pick up and do wonders with (Tuca & Bertie).
This year’s Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022, on NBC.
