Nintendo has announced that Blizzard Entertainment’s planned Overwatch event at New York City’s Nintendo NYC store, is canceled. This follows a turmoil filled time for Blizzard after the controversy of how the company handled statements made by Hearthstone player “Blitzchung,” in support of the Hong Kong protests.
The event meant to celebrate the release of Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch, it was to include appearances by the much-beloved Overwatch voice actors. While the tweet from Nintendo NYC makes it clear that this was a choice made by Blizzard, the replies and tweets about the cancelation show that many support the removal of the event, with postings of #BoycottBlizzard, #StandWithHongKong, and pictures of Overwatch’s Mei in protest gear.
The cancelation of this event leaves questions about what will happen at this year’s Blizzcon, which is set to start Friday, November 1st.
