Watchers of the Cartoon Cartoon era of Cartoon Network do not have to be told of the might and hilarity of The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy and the goofy action of Codename: Kids Next Door. But even the most nostalgic of fans might not remember the amazing crossover between the two shows!
The Grim Adventures of The K.N.D. had the two shows main characters meet for one of the best moments of television.
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy was about two children who manage to beat the Grim Reaper in a game of chance, winning control of him forever by forcing him to be their best friend (more like slave). They go on all matter of wacky and insane adventures using Grim’s supernatural powers and the no nose Mandy’s aggression and cunning to defeat many a enemy. And Billy was an idiot. It was weird, it was out there, but it was pure comedy every time.
Codename: Kids Next Door was a bit different. Following a team of child operatives whose goal was to overthrow the tyranny of adults, it took everyday situations and amped them up to adult conspiracy. The humor was solid and each episode while self-contained would occasionally tie into larger series-long plots and recurring villains.
At this point, I usually will give you a synopsis of the crossover but that…is kind of tough this time. The two shows mashing up resulted in the already bizarre yet addicting pace of Billy and Mandy making the narrative filled with hilarious jokes tweaking the plot. But the best summation I can give is that after a unique series of events Mandy realizes her constant dream of world domination is possible through control of the globally placed and 2×4 armed K.N.D. operatives. She manages to take control and basically turn them into the cult of Mandy.
It results in Billy absorbing the world’s children into a large mass of collected souls that include other Cartoon Network main characters, all because he is fused with a pair of lucky pants, Grim’s scythe, and the delightful children from down the lane…
Once again, Billy and Mandy was weird….
Giving away the ending does this episode is an injustice, but watch the credits! Images from other “Crossovers” will make the little kid you still are squeal!
So is it worth finding and watching? Yes! A funny mix of both shows themes, nods to other shows, and with hilarious commentary about all of that, makes this a must watch for anyone who watched the old Cartoon Network.
And we will see you next time we ask Do You Remember?
