“Originally released in May 2003, Daft Punk & Leiji Matsumoto’s Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem was written by Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Cédric Hervet, directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi and supervised by the legendary Leiji Matsumoto.

Interstella 5555 tells the story of the abduction of an alien music band by an evil human character who has dark plans. The hour-long film was cut into music videos to accompany Daft Punk’s album Discovery, and is rare to see in its original form in cinemas.

The film will be immediately followed by a curated selection of iconic Daft Punk videos from directors including Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Seb Janiak, Roman Coppola, and Warren Fu.”

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is a sci-fi anime musical written by Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo) and Cédric Hervet (Daft Arts crew member and regular Daft Punk Creative Director), it was directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi and supervised by Leiji Matsumoto. Based on Daft Punk’s Discovery Album, Interstella 5555 serves as a visual companion to the music, telling the story of 5 alien musicians abducted and brought to Earth for nefarious reasons, their escape relies on a lone-space pilot. The film would gain critical acclaim, with praise for its retro art style and brilliant use of Daft Punk’s second album to tell a captivating story.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem was originally released in 2001 as segmented music videos aired as part of Toonami’s Midnight Run. It would later premiere as a full film in 2003 at the Cannes Film Festival.

The version heading to theaters this December is a 4K remaster, with some fans voicing concerns as AI was reportedly used to upscale the footage.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem Remaster will be in theaters worldwide on Thursday, December 12th. Tickets go on sale November 13th at 6 AM PT, 9 AM ET, 2 PM GMT, and 3 PM CET. Head here to learn more and sign-up updates.
