The magic of magic is its limitless possibilities. Untold realms, amazing creatures, incredible abilities. Magical tales captivate and enchant because of the way they can take you to another world. And all of that is how I describe the work of Shauna J. Grant, the creator of Mimi and the Cutie Catastrophe!
Grant is a cartoonist and fan of classic 90’s anime & cartoons (you know, the good stuff) who wants to add diversity to the world of comics, she is creating stories & artwork of black girls living their best magical lives!
Grant’s first book, Mimi and the Cutie Catastrophe made its debut this summer. A part of Scholastic’s Graphix Chapters line, it is a wholesome and funny graphic novel about a magical little girl on a big adventure! It is the first book in a planned series.

“Mimi is as cute as can be! But when people start treating her like she’s too cute to do anything meaningful, Mimi begins to question her self-worth. With the help of her best friend and enchanted toy dog, Penelope, Mimi uses magic to transform into someone stronger, smarter, and cooler than herself. But the more she changes, the more lost and lonely she feels… Can Mimi find strength and confidence and overcome this cute-astrophe?”
