Ahead of her appearances at this year’s Virtual Crunchyroll Expo, we got the chance to ask voice actress Cherami Leigh about her past roles and characters. It was a great peek at how she views the iconic characters she has played!

Nerdier Tides: “Are you anything like Minako Aino (Sailor Venus)? What do you have in common?

Cherami Leigh: “I used to think that I wasn’t much like Sailor Venus, and I was so surprised that I got cast in Sailor Moon at all! I was like Sailor Venus?! Really?! And then, as we started working on the show, I’m like – I love quotations! I try to get them right though, is the difference. But I love quotes! I buy books of quotes. I love sharing affirmations so that we absolutely have in common, I am fascinated by people, celebrities, famous scientists, learning things about historical events in time, and artists. I’m always reading nonfiction books about people’s lives and memoirs. I’m always watching documentaries. So while she’s obsessed with pop stars and celebrities and I definitely was when I was younger, I think it has evolved into still being fascinated by stories of people and wanting to know as much trivia about them as you possibly can.

She is way better at sports than I am. I am very much uncoordinated. I can dance and I’m great about running or any sport or athletic situation that does not involve hand eye coordination or a ball or a bat. As soon as you start adding props I start getting into trouble and she is absolutely incredibly gifted in that space. I am terrified of singing and she wants to be an idol so that is where we differ.

She’s very fun! She loves her friends and family. She’s very loyal, and she loves cats. I feel that I relate to both of those aspects and, because of Sailor Venus, I now have a very impressive orange wardrobe I did not have before I started working on the show. Now I have many orange pieces of clothing!”

Nerdier Tides: “What was it like voicing Anaak Zahard in Tower of God?

Cherami Leigh: “I was so nervous about this project and working on Tower of God. This was the last session that I did – I had done two sessions, just started working on this character, and I remember getting my car going to get groceries and got the news that we were on lockdown. This was the first episode, and I thought, how are we going to do this show? So this was the first project that I did in lockdown with my booth at home. It actually feels pretty poignant – the show is all about people fighting for survival and trying to figure out how we’re going to make things work and keep our head above water in these tough situations. I love Anaak’s spirit. I love how strong she is, and it was really fun to get to play her. Also, the character design is adorable. I have never gotten to play any character that looks like her, and it was really fun.”

Cherami Leigh has voiced iconic characters including Asuna Yuuki in Sword Art Online, Minako Aino/ Sailor Venus in Sailor Moon, and Lucy Heartfilia in Fairy Tail. Anime Fans are sure to be delighted when she pays a visit to the V-CRX!
