Nintendo Stopping Production Of Wii U Consoles And Accessories

Nintendo Preps for the "Switch"

As we end 2016 Nintendo of America has released a statement that production of the Wii U is ceasing this month, This comes alongside it’s announcement on the Japanese Nintendo site.

“We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

Statement made by Nintendo Of America to idigitaltimes.com

This doesn’t come as a shock to watchers of the game industry who noted that the Wii U had no more slotted releases beyond the 2016 holiday season and 2017 release of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild which is also being released on the Nintendo Switch. The cease of Wii U production is all in preparation for the Nintendo Switch’s March 2017 launch.
