LucasArts Causes Closure Of Long Time Star Wars Fan Group “New York Jedi”

A fan group going since 2005 has received orders to stop

Long running fan group and martial arts academy, New York Jedi and Lightsaber Academy has be shut down due to lawsuit by LucasArts Film and parent company Disney.

Founded in 2005, New York Jedi taught classes in saber combat, performed at conventions and sold fan merchandise (something LucasArts claims comes extremly close to copyright infringement).

The announcement posted to their Facebook page

The group has announced the officially closure of their site and other outlets, though at the time of writing the site and page facebook page are both still up.

It is a sad day for fan groups as this joins a growing list of projects and groups being shut down by the companies that own the content they love.

Is this a dangerous trend or are companies just protecting what is their own?
