While live-action Disney adaptations and remakes have become the norm, back in the 1990s, the idea was thrilling: giving iconic characters a chance to come to life in a whole new way. One of them was 1997’s live-action Cinderella, starring singer, songwriter, and actress Brandy Norwood, who is set to reprise the role of the much-beloved in Disney Princess Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.
Rodger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a musical fantasy film directed by Robert Iscove, written by Robert L. Freedman, and a remake of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical, which is based on the classic fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. The film was well-received by viewers at the time for its diverse cast, costume design, and all-star cast. It stars Brandy, Whitney Houston, Whoopi Goldberg, Jason Alexander, Bernadette Peters, Victor Garber, Veanne Cox, Natalie Desselle, and Paolo Montalbán.
Descendants is a musical fantasy film series following the children of famous Disney characters as they navigate their parents’ legacies and their own choices. The original film debuted in 2015 and followed the teenage children of Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent, Snow White’s The Evil Queen, Aladdin’s Jafar, and 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil, respectively, as they try to integrate into life outside of the prison colony they grew up in. The film was received well and would be the start of a franchise that would include several direct sequels, an animated spin-off, TV specials, and books.
While it isn’t clear if this will be the same Cinderella Brandy depicted in 1997, it is sure to make fans happy to return to the character.
Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is a direct sequel to Descendants: The Rise of Red and is the fifth film in the Descendants franchise. It is directed by Kimmy Gatewood and written by Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer. It stars Kylie Cantrall as Red (the daughter of Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts) and Malia Baker as Chloe Charming (the daughter of Cinderella and King Charming) as they deal with the consequences of their previous time-travel adventures. In addition to Brandy, the cast also includes Leonardo Nam, Liamani Segura, Brendon Tremblay, Alexandro Byrd, Kiara Romero, Joel Qulette, Zavien Garrett, Ryan McEwen, Rita Ora, and Melanie Paxson.
Descendants: Wicked Wonderland will premiere this summer on the Disney Channel and Disney+. You can check out the previous entries on Disney+.
