The Much-Loved Anime Film ‘Summer Wars’ Is Getting A 4K Blu-Ray Release Next Month

The much-loved sci-fi anime Summer Wars is getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, giving fans a new way to enjoy the story of Kenji, his classmate Natsuko, her remarkable family, and a dangerous computer virus.

“Kenji is a shy part-time moderator for OZ, the virtual reality world that powers everyday life, until pretty and popular Natsuki recruits him to be her fake boyfriend. While posing as an affluent suitor to Natsuki’s family, a rogue A.I. program steals his online identity, and Kenji is accused of hacking OZ and causing real world catastrophes. As the destruction in OZ throws Natsuki’s family into disarray, Kenji must unite his newfound connections to overcome an impending cyber apocalypse.

Summer Wars was released in 2009 and is directed by Mamoru Hosoda (who also created the story), with a screenplay by Satoko Okudera, music by Akihiko Matsumoto, and animation by Madhouse. It is the story of high school student Kenji, who, while spending time with his classmate Natsuki to celebrate her grandmother’s birthday, is drawn into a conspiracy to tear down OZ, a virtual reality internet service used across the globe by the public, corporations, and the government. The film has gained both critic and fan praise for its imaginative and vibrant visuals, compelling story, and dynamic cast of characters.

The Summer Wars Blue-ray release includes the movie with English and Japanese audio options, and English, English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitle options.
