“The Rose of Versailles” theatrical film gets new trailer ahead of January release

The story of two women during a time of conflict and change.

The upcoming The Rose of Versailles theatrical film has gotten a new trailer, giving a peek at its story of love and courage during the French Revolution.

“This is a “story of love and destiny” in the turbulent times of the French Revolution, in which people lived out their lives to the fullest.”

The Rose of Versailles is a romance manga series written and illustrated by Riyoko Ikeda. A historical drama, it follows the lives of the real figure Marie Antoinette, and the fictional character of Oscar Francois de Jayjayes, two women navigating the French Revolution. The series has gotten several spin-offs and has been adapted into an anime, a live-action film, musicals, and more.

The 2025 film was announced in 2022 and is directed by Ai Yoshimura, with a script by Tomoko Kinshun, music by Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, character designs by Marika Oka, and animation production by MAPPA. The film stars Aya Hirano, Miyuki Sawashiro, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, and Kazuki Kato.

The Rose of Versailles (2025) will premiere in Japan on January 31, 2025. No word yet on a North American or European release.
