Are you an aspiring mangaka or writer? Then the chance to share your big idea is nearly here, as VIZ’s VIZ Originals are returning to Anime NYC for portfolio reviews!

VIZ Originals is VIZ Media’s imprint label that publishes original manga series and stories. This portfolio review will be in person (though you have to register online prior), with VIZ asking for samples of sequential art that highlights dynamic paneling, skillful black-and-white artwork, and compelling storytelling, as well as writing samples.

Submission Guidelines:

One-shots Review Guidelines

Original manga one-shots that are:

• Between 20–50 pages
• A self-contained story (not a chapter 1 of a longer story)
• Completed pages or thumbnails of the full story

Portfolio Guidelines

Artists:

• Samples of sequential works that best highlight your art style and storytelling
• Best works that showcase composition, character expressions, and scene details
• Include finished pieces, not only sketch or concept work
• Include original character art pieces – some fan work is okay

Writers:

• Samples of sequential works that best highlight your writing and story ideas
• List your creative writing work – prose and fan work is okay
• VIZ Originals can only consider writing samples in English at this time

This is your chance to share your work in person. If you can meet the guidelines ahead of the convention, head here to learn more and to register. Registrations will close on August 20, 2024, at 5 pm PST. A heads up though that Anime NYC is a ticketed event, and signing up for a portfolio review doesn’t allow entry into Anime NYC itself, so a badge must be acquired separately.
