The end of an era.

As we reported earlier this month, entertainment company Rooster Teeth is being shut down after parent company Warner Bros. Discovery failing to find a buyer. Truly the end of an era, this past weekend saw a heartwarming way to prepare for the big goodbye with four of the Rooster Teeth founders heading back to where it all began: Playing Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox.

Rooster Teeth was founded in 2003 by Burnie Burns, Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey, Jason Saldaña, Gus Sorola, and Joel Heyman. It rose to prominence among gaming/pop culture fans. They are well known for their Halo-based machinima series Red vs. Blue, and original animated action-series RWBY. Their lineup includes live-action shorts & series, let’s Plays, video games, reality shows, and podcasts, and more. They would even start their convention, Rooster Teeth Expo. Rooster Teeth was acquired by YouTube network Fullscreen. It would later end up as a part of Warner Bros. Discovery due to a series of media acquisitions and mergers.

While loved by fans, there has been some dissatisfaction and comparatively waning interest in the content from Rooster Teeth, the production company having to also address allegations by former employees of a toxic workspace that included crunch culture, racism, sexual misconduct, homophobia, and transphobia.

The closure of the company was attributed in a email by Rooster Teeth general manager Joseph Levin as “fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.”

Since the announcement of Rooster Teeth’s closure, fans have sent their love and thanks to the creators.

It was fun and touching to see Burnie Burns, Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey, and Gus Sorola, have a chill gaming session together, the weight of what it really means is hard to ignore. You can watch the full video here.
