Legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama has passed away at age 68, announced by the official Dragon Ball account in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) and the official Dragon Ball site. He passed on March 1st due to an acute subdural hematoma.

The letter as posted to the official website:

Our condolences go to his family and his friends.

Toriyama came to prominence with the release of the action-adventure series Dr. Slump in 1980 and the genre-defining and eternally iconic Dragon Ball in 1984. He would also work as a character designer for the video game Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger, and the Dragon Quest series.

This news will hit fans hard and leaves the future of several recently announced Dragon Ball projects that involved Toriyama unclear. His family has made a request of fans to refrain from sending gifts or making interview requests.

Thank you for the adventures, Mr. Toriyama. You and the worlds you created will never be forgotten.
