Japan Society’s upcoming ‘Poupelle of Chimney Town’ will feature an in-person appearance by creator Akihiro Nishino

Take a journey to see the true sky! New York’s Japan Society will be screening the 2020 Japanese Anime fantasy film Poupelle of Chimney Town with a special in-person appearance by the creator Akihiro Nishino!

Poupelle of Chimney Town is based on a children’s picture book of the same name by Akihiro Nishino. The story of a young boy who, tired of living in a city trapped under heavy smoke, sets out alongside a monster made of garbage to see the sky. The story would later be expanded through a stage play, musical (which you can watch with English subtitles for free), and gallery exhibitions in Japan, Paris, and New York. The film was directed by Yusuke Hirota, with a screenplay by Akihiro Nishino, character designs by Atsuko Fukushima, music by Youki Kojima and Yuta Bando, and animated by Studio 4°C.

The Japanese Society screening will have Akihiro Nishino appearing in-person to discuss the series and the world of Chimney Town, as well as a stage adaptation heading to theaters around the world, including New York City’s Broadway and London’s West End.

The Japan Society is a cultural organization based in the heart of New York City, connecting Japan’s art, culture, business, and society with others. It was inspired by the Japanese concept of kizuna (絆), their goal is “to forge deep connections to bind people together.” They host a wide range of events and classes in their landmark building (designed by Junzo Yoshimura).
